Skating School in Helsinki
Learn to skate at HTK – Helsinki Figure Skating Club
Learning basic skating skills provides an excellent basis for many sports: it teaches body balance, coordination, agility and social skills. Many ice-hockey players have started their careers in skating schools where teaching focuses on fundamentals: how to stay up and fall safely, skating forward and backward, gliding, stopping, one-foot balances, jumping etc. All this happens in an encouraging and positive atmosphere with qualified instructors, respecting each skater’s own learning rhythm. We master all sorts of different plays and tricks to keep children happy and motivated, whilst at the same time teaching them new abilities. The curriculum is built around themes which again makes learning more enjoyable. The season finishes at Christmas and Spring shows where children get to show what they have learned during the year.
Children can start as early as 3 years old, either in our ‘JääTähdet’ group or together with an adult in ‘Lapsi ja Aikuinen’ group. And don’t forget that adults can start figure skating too: We have groups for beginners, advance level skaters and as a novelty, also a program ice for those who are competing and want to polish their choreographies together with a skilled coach. We also offer classes for schoolgoers (7-14-year-old) who want to learn to skate. Skating is really meant for everybody!
All teaching for children happens in small groups which are formed according to the kids’ start level. When they advance, they move on to the next level. Hence, we ensure that those who have never skated before, receive extra attention from our instructors and assistants and those with more pace are not hampered by the slower ones.
Upon completion of basic skills in skating schools, HTK provides the possibility to continue to practice twice a week in ‘Tintit” group which is meant for those 4-6-year-old who already know some basics. After ‘Tintit’ the child can move on to other groups, either in individuals or synchronized skating. By the way, did you know that HTK’s senior synchronized team, Helsinki Rockettes, has won several world championships medals?
