Kids skating school in Helsinki

Learning basic skating skills provides an excellent basis for many sports: it teaches body balance, coordination, agility and social skills. All this happens in an encouraging and positive atmosphere with trained instructors, respecting each skater’s own learning rhythm. We master all sorts of different plays and tricks to keep children happy and motivated, whilst at the same time teaching them new abilities. The curriculum is built around themes which again makes learning more enjoyable. The season finishes at Christmas and Spring shows where children get to show what they have learned during the year.

Children can start as early as 3 years old, either in our ‘Jäätähdet’ group or together with an adult in ‘Lapsi ja aikuinen’ group. We also offer classes for school-aged- kids (7-15-year-old) who want to learn to skate. Skating is really meant for everybody!

All courses for kids and youngsters is held three times a week

3-7-year-old kids (JääTähdet or Lapsi ja aikuinen)

  • Mondays at Salmisaari ice rink at 18.00-18.45
  • Thursdays at Herttoniemi ice rink at 17.30-18.15
  • Sundays at Herttoniemi ice rink at 11.15-12.00

For school aged kids

  • Mondays at Salmisaari ice rink at 18.45-19.30
  • Thursdays at Herttoniemi ice rink at 17.30-18.15
  • Sundays at Herttoniemi ice rink at 12.00-12.45

All teaching for children happens in small groups which are formed according to the kids’ start level. When they advance, they move on to the next level. Hence, we ensure that those who have never skated before, receive extra attention from our instructors and assistants and those with more pace are not hampered by the slower ones.

Upon completion of basic skills in skating schools, HTK provides the possibility to continue to practice twice a week in ‘Tintit” group which is meant for those 4-6-year-old who already know some basics. For older kids our ”Harrastajat” group opens the possibility to practice twice a week a bit more challenging skills. After ‘Tintit’ the child can move on to other groups, either in individuals or synchronized skating. By the way, did you know that HTK’s senior synchronized team, Helsinki Rockettes, has won the world title now four times?

Together with an adult?

If a 3-7-year-old needs support and encouragement to learn something new, this group offers guided practice with an adult. Music, equipment, and varied tracks are used on the ice to support the learning of new skills.
